Standard Course of Study

  • North Carolina’s Standard Course of Study defines the appropriate content standards for each grade level and each high school course to provide a uniform set of learning standards for every public school in North Carolina. These standards define what students know and should be able to do. You can access the Standard Course of Study online at http://www.dpi.state.nc.us/curriculum/

  • Your child will be given a Reading and Math EOG this year in May based on the Standard Course of Study in Mathematics and English Language Arts.

Essential Standards-Science

  • The material that Is covered in 3rd grade science includes:
  • Forces and Motion
  • Properties of Matter
  • Conservation and Transfer of Energy
  • Earth in the Universe
  • Earth Systems
  • Living Organisms
  • Ecosystems
  • Science may be explicitly taught, preformed through S.T.E.M. Challenges, or integrated into ELA curriculum through informational texts.

Essential Standards-Social Studies

  • The material that is covered in social studies this year includes:
  • History of Local and Regional Communities
  • 5 Themes of Geography
  • Entrepreneurship in a market economy
  • Local Government
  • Responsible Citizenship
  • Diverse Cultures in local and regional communities
  • Social Studies may be explicitly taught as well as integrated into the ELA curriculum through informational texts.

Writing

  • Students will integrate writing across the curriculum.
  • There are four types of writing taught this year:
  1. Argument/Opinion-based
  2. Informative/Explanatory
  3. Narratives
  4. Short research projects

Math Common Core

  • Operations and Algebraic Thinking (30%-35% EOG*)

-Multiplication and Division

-Solving word problems using all four operations

  • Number and Operations in Base Ten (5%-10% EOG*)

-Using place value to understand how to add, subtract, multiply and

divide multi-digit numbers

  • Fractions (20-25% EOG*)

-Develop Understanding of fractions as numbers

  • Measurement and Data (22%-27% EOG*)

-Intervals of time

-Present & Interpret Data

-Geometric measurement (area & perimeter)

  • Geometry (10%-15% EOG*)

-Shapes and their attributes

Reading Common Core

  • Reading for Literature (32%-37% EOG*)

-Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding referring

directly to the text for answers

-Determine the central message, lesson, or moral and explain how it

is conveyed through key details in the text

-Determine meaning of words or phrases as they are used in a text

-Distinguish point of view

  • Reading for Informational Text (41%-45% EOG*)

-Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding referring

directly to the text for answers

-Determine Main Idea

-Describe relationships between texts

-Use information from text features to demonstrate understanding

  • Language (20%-24% EOG*)

-Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English

grammar and usage when writing or speaking

-Determine meaning of words or phrases as they are used in a text

Strategies to Help Your Child at Home

  • Make sure that your child is reading nightly!
  • Have your child explain to you how they know an answer is correct.
  • Encourage them to use evidence from the text as proof.
  • Build vocabulary by encouraging your child to use context clues from the sentence.
  • Encourage students to look for clues when they encounter unfamiliar words in text.
  • Work with your child to ensure that they are fluent in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Encourage your child to always show his/her work on math problems.
  • Students should underline/circle key numbers and words in mathematical problems and reading passages.
